FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about joining SMVC

Can I join at anytime?

Yes. Simply turn up at any practice. You will be made most welcome. You should click on the JOIN US to find out more about joining us.

If I join do I need to read music?

You do not need to be able to read music to sing with SMVC. You will be loaned music and, as time goes by, you will learn how to follow a score. Our MD Huw takes time to explain how to read music, how to follow a score and yo will soon pick up the basics.

Will I have an audition?

No. We do not have voice tests. You might be asked to sing a few scales in private just to check you are singing in the right voice range but no one will be testing you. We are not searching for Pavoroties!

How much does it cost to join?

For the first 4/5 weeks nothing (other than £1 for tea or coffee). Full members pay £156 per annum. This can be paid in one or two payments (we accept most cards) or in monthly installments by standing order. Our year runs Jan to Dec so if you join later i the year you pay pro-rata.

Do I pay for my uniform?

The choir supplies your blue blazer and choir tie on loan. We expect members to have their own pale blue shirt, mid-grey trousers, black socks and polished black shoes.

Do I have to sing at every concert/event?

Singing in a Male Voice Choir means attending practice every week to learn your part. You become an essential part of your Section and the Choir. Once you are a confident singer you will want to show off your skill as a singer and to join your fellow choristers singing. We would expect you to attend concerts and events. Of course, there may be times when you cannot attend an event due to other commitments. We all understand that.

I have a disability, can you help?

Yes, we would welcome anyone with a disability and help them howsoever we can. Our practice venue is all on one level, no stairs. If we sing in a venue where there are access problems we would do our best to help less able members. We do have members who, because of their age or disability, sing seated. It is not a problem.
